¿Nieva en Temuco?

Does it snow in Temuco?

Why snow is so rare in the city, why it sometimes “didn't snow” despite the cold, when it's most likely and where to find it a few hours away.

Does it snow in Temuco? Very little. The city sits just 114 metres above sea level in the Cautín river valley, and its winter is wet but not that cold: lows hover around 4–5 °C and highs around 11 °C. At those temperatures, the precipitation from Pacific fronts almost always falls as rain. Snow in the city requires an uncommon combination: very cold polar air arriving right behind a front, with the thermometer near 0 °C while it is still raining. It happens in some winters —usually between June and August— and when it does, it tends to be sleet or a light fall of a few hours that rarely settles on the streets.

That's why a snowfall in Temuco makes the news and becomes the talk of the town: some winters pass without a single flake, others bring one or two white mornings that melt before noon. What is routine is frost: on clear June and July mornings the temperature drops below 0 °C and roofs, lawns and windscreens wake up white with rime, which from a distance is sometimes mistaken for snow.

¿Por qué no nevó hoy si hace tanto frío?

Why didn't it snow today if it's so cold?

It's the classic question on a winter day of 2 °C and rain. Cold alone isn't enough for snow: the whole column of air between cloud and ground needs to be near or below 0 °C. In Temuco the air near the surface, moistened and tempered by the ocean, is usually a degree or two above freezing, so the flake melts before it reaches the ground and falls as cold rain or sleet. Conversely, on the clear, very cold nights that bring frost there are almost never clouds to deliver snow. Snow needs cold and precipitation at the same time, and in the valley that coincidence is rare.
