A orillas del lago Villarrica se levantan dos de los destinos más populares del sur de Chile: Villarrica, a cerca de una hora al sureste de Temuco, y Pucón, algo más allá, a alrededor de hora y media. On the shores of Lake Villarrica sit two of southern Chile's most popular destinations: Villarrica, about an hour southeast of Temuco, and Pucón, a bit further on, around an hour and a half. Pucón is the heart of adventure tourism in Araucanía and a brand in itself. From there you can arrange guided ascents of the Villarrica volcano (when activity levels allow), rafting and kayaking on the Trancura river, canopy zip-lines over the forest, horseback rides and trips to nearby Huerquehue National Park, with its terraced lakes and araucarias, or to the Ojos del Caburgua, turquoise pools fed by waterfalls. The area is also famous for its many hot springs, fed by volcanic heat, ranging from resorts with pools to rustic pools up in the mountains.

Villarrica is quieter, with slightly softer prices and a lovely lakefront promenade; it works well as a base for those seeking calm and is closer to Temuco. Pucón is more touristy, with far more restaurants, outdoor shops, operators and nightlife, and concentrates the adrenaline. Many visitors combine both: they stay in Villarrica and do the activities from Pucón, about 25 minutes away along the lake shore.

El trayecto es sencillo y pavimentado: se sale de Temuco hacia el sur y luego al oriente por la ruta que bordea el valle hasta Freire y Villarrica, y desde ahí se continúa por la orilla del lago hasta Pucón. Son caminos buenos, con estaciones de servicio y pueblos en el camino, aptos para cualquier auto. En temporada alta hay más tránsito, sobre todo los fines de semana y a la salida y regreso de Pucón, así que calcula holgura. Si viajas en bus, los servicios desde el terminal de Temuco son frecuentes y directos.

The drive is simple and paved: you leave Temuco heading south and then east on the road that skirts the valley to Freire and Villarrica, and from there you continue along the lake shore to Pucón. The roads are good, with service stations and towns along the way, fine for any car. In high season there is more traffic, especially on weekends and on the way in and out of Pucón, so allow extra time. If you travel by bus, services from Temuco's terminal are frequent and direct.

Summer (December–March) is high season: the lake is warm for swimming, everything is open, but there are big crowds and high prices, especially the first fortnight of February.
