Temuco es mucho más que un punto en la Ruta 5. Es la capital de La Araucanía, la región con la mayor proporción de población mapuche del país, y funciona como la gran ciudad de servicios de todo el sur interior de Chile. Temuco is far more than a dot on Route 5. It is the capital of La Araucanía, the region with the highest share of Mapuche population in the country, and it works as the great service city for all of inland southern Chile. Here you find the referral regional hospital, the courts, the universities, the big shopping centres and the government offices that draw residents from dozens of surrounding communes. When someone from the countryside or a nearby town says “I'm going to the city”, they almost always mean Temuco.

Its location explains much of its character. It sits in the central valley, between the coastal range and the Andes, which makes it a natural base for exploring the Llaima and Villarrica volcanoes, the araucaria forests of Conguillío National Park and the lakes and hot springs around Pucón. In a few hours you go from downtown shops to native forest. That closeness to nature, together with a living Mapuche identity and a distinctly rainy climate, gives it a personality unlike the cities of Chile's north and centre.

Hoy combina un centro comercial denso y bullicioso con barrios universitarios, y se prepara para su aniversario 150 renovando el centro y espacios emblemáticos como el Mercado Municipal. And it is a young, changing city. Founded only in 1881, it rose with the railway and settlement, blending Mapuche, Chilean and European settler populations. Today it mixes a dense, busy commercial downtown with student neighbourhoods, and it is preparing for its 150th anniversary by renewing the centre and landmarks such as the Municipal Market. Temuco is in southern Chile, about 670 km south of Santiago along Route 5 (the Pan-American Highway), in the central valley of La Araucanía. It sits on the Cautín River at the foot of Cerro Ñielol, around 114 m above sea level and a little over 300 km north of Puerto Montt. It is the gateway to the southern lakes-and-volcanoes country.

La mejor época es el verano, de diciembre a marzo, cuando el clima es más seco y templado y se abren las excursiones a Conguillío y Pucón. El otoño tiñe de rojo los bosques nativos, pero el invierno (mayo a agosto) es frío y muy lluvioso. Revisa el clima por estaciones antes de decidir qué llevar.

The best time is summer, December to March, when the weather is drier and mild and day trips to Conguillío and Pucón open up. Autumn turns the native forests red, but winter (May to August) is cold and very wet. Check the seasonal climate before deciding what to pack.

En avión llegas al Aeropuerto Internacional La Araucanía (código ZCO), cerca de Freire, unos 20 km al sur, con vuelos diarios a Santiago. En bus, el Terminal Rodoviario conecta con todo el país. En auto, la Ruta 5 atraviesa la región de norte a sur.
