El ZCO abrió a comienzos de la década de 2010 para reemplazar al antiguo aeródromo urbano de Maquehue y hoy es la principal puerta aérea de la región. Al estar al sur de Temuco, junto a la comuna de Freire y con acceso desde la Ruta 5 Panamericana, sirve por igual a la ciudad y a toda La Araucanía, incluido el flujo turístico que baja hacia los lagos. Es un aeropuerto de tamaño regional: cómodo, de una terminal, pensado para vuelos de cabotaje.

ZCO opened in the early 2010s to replace the old in-town Maquehue aerodrome, and it is now the region's main air gateway. Sitting south of Temuco, next to the commune of Freire and reached from the Ruta 5 Panamericana, it serves the city and all of Araucanía alike, including the tourist flow heading down to the lakes. It's a regional-sized airport: comfortable, single-terminal, built for domestic flights.

El eje del tráfico es la ruta a Santiago, con varias frecuencias diarias que conectan Temuco con la capital y, desde ahí, con el resto de Chile y los vuelos internacionales. Según la temporada, puede haber también enlaces con otras ciudades del país. The backbone is the route to Santiago, with several daily frequencies linking Temuco to the capital and, from there, to the rest of Chile and international flights. Depending on the season, there may also be links to other cities. Airlines, schedules and fares change constantly, so check and buy directly from the airlines or on the airport's site; we don't publish timetables that would go out of date.

Como casi todo pasa por Santiago, si vuelas hacia o desde otra región del país lo más probable es que hagas conexión en la capital; deja un margen de tiempo cómodo entre tramos, sobre todo si cambias de aerolínea o de terminal. Las tarifas suben en temporada alta —verano, Fiestas Patrias y fines de semana largos—, así que reservar con anticipación conviene tanto para el vuelo como para el traslado en tierra.

Since almost everything routes through Santiago, if you're flying to or from another region you'll most likely connect in the capital; leave a comfortable buffer between legs, especially if you switch airlines or terminals. Fares rise in high season —summer, national holidays and long weekends— so booking ahead pays off for both the flight and the ground transfer.

La terminal reúne los servicios habituales de un aeropuerto regional: mesones de las aerolíneas, control de seguridad, sala de embarque, retiro de equipaje y una oferta de cafetería, arriendo de autos y estacionamiento. Al ser compacta, los tiempos de circulación son cortos; aun así, presentarse con la antelación que indique tu aerolínea es lo prudente, sobre todo en temporada alta de verano.

The terminal has the usual services of a regional airport: airline check-in counters, security, a boarding area, baggage claim and a mix of café, car rental and parking. Being compact, walking times are short; even so, arriving with the lead time your airline advises is wise, especially in the high summer season.

Al llegar, el retiro de equipaje y la salida son rápidos, y allí mismo están los mostradores de arriendo y la zona donde esperan taxis y traslados. Si necesitas efectivo, cámbialo o retíralo antes de salir de viaje, ya que la oferta de servicios dentro de una terminal regional es limitada comparada con un gran aeropuerto. Ten a mano la dirección de tu alojamiento para el conductor.

On arrival, baggage claim and the exit are quick, and right there you'll find the rental counters and the area where taxis and transfers wait. If you need cash, change or withdraw it before travelling, since the range of services inside a regional terminal is limited compared with a large airport. Keep your accommodation's address handy for the driver.

Desde el aeropuerto puedes tomar un traslado (transfer) compartido, un taxi o un auto de arriendo. En auto, el viaje al centro de Temuco toma alrededor de 25–35 minutos por la Ruta 5.

El traslado compartido (transfer puerta a puerta) es la opción más económica si no llevas prisa; el taxi es directo y cómodo con equipaje; y el arriendo de auto es lo más práctico si piensas moverte por la región. Para viajar más lejos por tierra desde la ciudad, el terminal de buses conecta con Santiago, Pucón y el sur. Confirma tarifas y disponibilidad con cada operador antes de viajar.

The shared transfer (door-to-door) is the cheapest option if you're not in a hurry; a taxi is direct and comfortable with luggage; and car rental is the most practical if you plan to move around the region. To travel further overland from the city, the bus terminal connects to Santiago, Pucón and the south. Confirm fares and availability with each operator before you travel.

El aeropuerto cuenta con estacionamiento para dejar el auto por horas o por el día si vas a buscar a alguien o viajas por poco tiempo. Consejos prácticos: como el ZCO está fuera de la ciudad, calcula el trayecto con holgura por si hay tráfico en la Ruta 5; lleva efectivo por si algún servicio no toma tarjeta; y si aterrizas de noche, ten reservado tu traslado o arriendo, porque la oferta espontánea a esa hora es menor.

The airport has parking to leave the car by the hour or for the day if you're picking someone up or travelling briefly. Practical tips: since ZCO is out of town, allow generous time for the drive in case of traffic on Ruta 5; carry some cash in case a service doesn't take cards; and if you land at night, have your transfer or rental booked, as walk-up options are thinner at that hour.

Para muchos viajeros el ZCO no es el destino sino el punto de partida hacia la zona de lagos y volcanes. Desde el aeropuerto, con auto propio o arrendado, se llega en pocas horas a Villarrica y Pucón, junto al lago y el volcán, y a la zona del Parque Nacional Conguillío. Volar a Temuco y seguir por tierra es una de las formas más rápidas de llegar al sur turístico de La Araucanía. Planifica el resto en la guía de excursiones y en la de cómo moverse.

For many travellers ZCO isn't the destination but the launch point towards the lake and volcano country. From the airport, with your own or a rented car, you reach Villarrica and Pucón —beside the lake and volcano— and the Conguillío National Park area within a few hours.
